The Last Supper

An open edition work of art depicting the Last Supper scene from the Holy Bible as depicted by the artist Lynn Darnelle. Below she describes her vision for this work of art:

I wanted to depict what I feel is a more realistic interpretation of this religious event. The Last Supper is described in the four books of the Bible, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Each one lends different information about what took place during that evening.

I departed from the traditionally serene mood of Christ and the disciples. Their body language is more animated to reflect the emotion.

What had the most impact for me was contemplating being one of the disciples. What range of emotions would I go through hearing this man, who I believe to be the Son of God and have left everything behind to follow, say He will be crucified and one of us, in this very room, will betray him. There would be anger, sorrow, confusion, and shock. I would wonder...What do I do now? Why must he die? Will I be the one to betray him?

Christ's facial expression represents one of a man who has come to grips with and accepted His destiny. The only person with a similar predetermined destiny would be one on death row. Imagine someone who knows exactly how and when He will leave this earth. The only difference being, that Christ was guilty of no sin and could have saved Himself, but instead died so that we may have life.
